BACK-TO-BACK CHAMP:
Winston seventh grader wins second consecutive District 15 Spelling Bee
The word was “omnipotent,” from the Latin omnipontem, meaning “all-powerful, almighty.”
Jonathan Matthew, a Winston Campus Junior High School seventh grader, might have seemed omnipotent after the 24th round of the 2010 District 15 Spelling Bee, held January 12 at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School.
Why?
Because correctly spelling “omnipotent” won him the contest for the second year in a row.
Jonathan will now advance to compete as the District 15 representative in the Suburban Cook Northern Area Spelling Bee, set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, at the Joseph Sears School, 542 Abbotsford Road, in Kenilworth.
The runner up in the 2010 District 15 Spelling Bee also came from Winston Campus—sixth grader Bryan Lu.
Jonathan and Bryan both won their respective school spelling bees to advance to the District competition, as did 18 other students:
