Workshop offers map for the ‘Independence Highway’
The Northwest Suburban Council of PTAs/PTSAs will present a workshop titled Independence Highway (PDF 267KB) for parents of District 15 junior high school students.
Independence Highway is a program designed by the Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity. It provides parents and teens the opportunity to discuss topics including sexuality and relationships, both together and with their peers, in a facilitated learning environment.
The program begins with the whole group—parents and students—gathering for a quiz about the evening’s curriculum. It then transitions into split-group sessions in which parents discuss brain development in teens, and students discuss peer pressure, goal setting, and media messages. The program concludes in a whole-group setting with a discussion on pregnancy and STDs/STIs and a question-and-answer period.
A presentation of Independence Highway is scheduled for female students and their parents on Thursday, February 11, from 6:45–8:45 p.m. at Walter R. Sundling Junior High School, 1100 N. Smith Street in Palatine. A presentation of the program for male students and their parents is scheduled for Thursday, February 18, also from 6:45–8:45 p.m. at Sundling.
Students from all District 15 junior high schools and their parents are invited to attend these presentations of Independence Highway, and are asked to RSVP at least five days prior to the program they wish to attend. To RSVP, contact Linda Millar, NWSC PTA health and safety chair, at linmillar@comcast.net.
