A
reasonably priced school lunch program is available at all 20 schools.
Breakfast is also offered at many schools. Meals are prepared and
packaged in individual servings in a central kitchen and delivered
daily to the schools. Food services staff at the junior highs prepare
food on-site daily. Menus are determined based on student preferences as well as USDA requirements. Several choices
are available each day. A monthly menu is distributed to students
and can be found on the districts Web site (see above). Breakfast
and lunch may be purchased by the day, week, month, semester, or
the year.
School meals are healthy meals. Studies show that students who eat school meals drink more milk and eat more fruits and vegetables than students who bring lunch from home. District 15 participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, which means that our meals meet federal guidelines for nutritional integrity based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Our meals must contain no more than 30% calories from fat, less than 10% saturated fat and must meet or exceed the recommended daily allowances of key nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium when averaged over a five-day period. Our daily menu selections are served in age-appropriate portions. All menus go through a nutritional analysis software program to ensure that we meet or exceed all federal program requirements.
District 15 kitchens have no fryers, and all our potato and chicken products are baked. Many items we purchase are specially formulated for school meals by companies such as Tyson, Jenni-O, Land O Lakes, Simplot, and Schwan’s. Our pizza products are formulated using low-fat cheeses and whole-wheat crusts. We offer whole grain products every day. Most of our products are transfat-free as well.
For the 2010-11 school year, the cost for breakfast is $1.25 per meal; the cost for
lunch is $2.00 per meal for elementary students, and $2.10 for junior high students. Milk is available for sale to children
who bring a lunch from home at a cost of 45¢ per ½ pint carton.
Elementary and junior high à
la carte items are available for purchase, however, not all items
are available at all schools, and not all items are available every
day.
Free and reduced-price meals are available to children whose families
are unable to pay full price. Application forms for these benefits are available at the schools and the Joseph M. Kiszka Educational Service Center.
MealTime Online
School Nutrition Services offers online meal payment program
at all district schools.
Parents can pay for school meals and monitor student account balances and transactions online.
Payments into a student’s school meal account can be made with most credit (Visa, Discover, or Mastercard) or debit cards. The MealTime Online payment website uses the most up-to-date security available. The online payment plan is an enhancement to the district’s existing pre-pay meal program. Cash or checks will still be accepted.
Parents can access their children’s meal account information at any time by visiting www.mymealtime.com or by clicking on the MealTime logo.
